An iconic waterfront hotel in downtown Toronto has gone on the market, with a record price tag for a Canadian hotel. An investment firm led by Toronto's Manji family is on the verge of acquiring the Canada Westin Hotel, one of the world's largest hotel chains. Three Westins is up for sale and looking for buyers as an unprecedented number of new hotels are opening in Calgary and Edmonton. The potential sale of the hotel comes at a time when the City of Toronto is working to revitalize its waterfront. The city wants to redevelop the Toronto Islands ferry terminal, renamed the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in 2013 and is in the midst of a public consultation on how to repair the aging Gardiner Expressway. But city planners are resisting the redevelopment of the Canada Westin Hotel and other waterfront homes because the site is too small and the hotels too expensive to pay for unionized jobs, the Toronto Star reported.
