Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market has been a favorite attraction for locals since the 1800’s. The complex includes 3 buildings, most notable for their fresh food markets. Owned by the City of Toronto, the St. Lawrence Market dates back to 1803, when it was given the “Market Block” title. Located between King Street East and the Esplanade, it is a popular place to be on Saturday mornings.
The South Market, located on the main and lower levels of the complex, is home to over 50 specialty vendors who deliver fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, baked goods and dairy products, as well as other non-food items.
The North Market, popular with locals on Saturday mornings for its Farmers’ Market, is strong in tradition and still going strong since 1803. Fresh seasonal produce from Southern Ontario farmers are available for purchase at the market.
Sunday’s at the St. Lawrence Market is known for hosting over 80 antique dealers, filling the market with treasures from time past. It’s the perfect place to be for antique collectors or simply to do something new and different on a Sunday afternoon.
Home to important Toronto history, the St. Lawrence Market also includes the Market Gallery, which is the official exhibition center for the City of Toronto Archives. Located on the second floor of the South Market, the gallery is the original council chamber and home to all the remains from Toronto’s City Hall between the years of 1845-1899, which once stood at that very spot. Paintings, artifacts, photographs, and original furnishings are all on display.
If you’re looking for something different to do on a weekend morning or want to explore a piece of Toronto’s history, visit the St. Lawrence Market.
HelloToronto Tip: The St. Lawrence Market also offers its space for rent and hosts several promotional functions, flea markets, displays, social gatherings, meetings and exhibitions throughout the year.
