Niagara-on-the-Lake: An idyllic getaway

About an hour and a half outside bustling Toronto is an idyllic spot chock full of history and entertainment.  Perhaps best known for its nearby neighbor Niagara Falls, charming Niagara-on-the-Lake is a terrific attraction all by itself.

Once the site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, the small town was later settled by Loyalists at the end of the American Revolution.  Today, more than two hundred years after its founding, Niagara-on-the-Lake has expanded into a wonderful collection of shops, restaurants, wineries, golf courses and historic sites.

Carriages take riders through the quaint streets of Old Town, while walkers can enjoy a lovely day of window shopping in the heritage business district.  Countless art galleries and antique stores display work by local artisans, and there are diners, coffee shops and fine dining restaurants for visitors on any budget.

Dozens of local wineries offer tastings and tours, while farms and their seasonal country markets are ideal for regional goodies.   Local theater companies offer lively entertainment, while more daring visitors can try jet boat tours and even a Lanternlit Ghost Walk, a stroll through the haunted history of the town’s pubs, inns and forts.

History buffs will enjoy a visit to old Fort George, a British fort which played a key role in the War of 1812.  Restored to its original state on the eve of the war, the fort’s costumed employees help recreate the time period for modern guests.

Nature lovers can enjoy a bike tour of the town and wineries, a fishing charter or the nearby Butterfly Conservatory.   If golf is your game, there are several beautiful courses nearby.  And Niagara-on-the-Lake’s delightful hotels and bed and breakfasts make the town ideal for weekend getaways.

With so many things to see and do all year long, Niagara-on-the-Lake is an ideal spot for Torontonians and visitors from far and wide.  It’s a little bit of history and a whole lot of entertainment, all in a charming package.
