About an hour and a half outside bustling Toronto is an idyllic spot chock full of history and entertainment. Perhaps best known for its nearby neighbor Niagara Falls, charming Niagara-on-the-Lake is a terrific attraction all by itself.
Once the site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, the small town was later settled by Loyalists at the end of the American Revolution. Today, more than two hundred years after its founding, Niagara-on-the-Lake has expanded into a wonderful collection of shops, restaurants, wineries, golf courses and historic sites.
Carriages take riders through the quaint streets of Old Town, while walkers can enjoy a lovely day of window shopping in the heritage business district. Countless art galleries and antique stores display work by local artisans, and there are diners, coffee shops and fine dining restaurants for visitors on any budget.
