Over Easy: Breakfast of Canadian champions

Mar 23, 2010

For HelloToronto.com

Breakfast is not usually my favorite meal of the day, but I guess at Over Easy I was in the mood for breakfast. The menu has a wide variety of breakfast favorites and some yummy lunch wraps.

When we ordered coffee, the waiter brought us a pot of coffee to share. This made refilling very convenient. Other beverages include espresso, cappuccino, hot and iced tea, fresh fruit juices and smoothies.

I ordered the breakfast burrito (a tortilla stuffed with scrambled eggs, tomato, avocado, green peppers, onions, cheese and bacon), and when the waiter asked if I wanted "home fries" I said yes, without knowing what they were. But when these home fries arrived, the little fried squares of potatoes were my favorite thing on the plate (and the burrito was very, very good). There were even some onions and spices fried with the home fries. Definitely order these if you like potatoes.

There are lots of omelette choices here -- plain, Greek, Tuscan, Spanish, cheese, Californian, vegetarian and western. They range from $7 to $11. You can order your eggs scrambled or eggs Benedict. Over Easy also serves the traditional waffles, French toast and pancake dishes.

If you're in the mood for a wrap, Over Easy has a lot of options for those, too. You can also order soup, salad or sides of bacon, toast, sausage, mushrooms, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit salad or grilled tomatoes.

The "healthy and light" menu items include hot oatmeal, fruit salad, granola, cold cereal, bagels and more.

The decor isn't too detailed. It's a pretty simple place with good, hearty breakfast food. The booths were cozy, and the service was friendly and fast.
